I've recently started playing Dead Island again. It's a pretty good game, but one thing I find mildly interesting is how it seems to merge different ideas and types of zombie into one game. While Left 4 Dead had the 'infected' style of zombie, that ran fast and noisily, and games from the mid 90's, like Resident Evil, seemed to just have slower ones, the merge of the two, along with some different and new ones, is something I find rather interesting to think about while applying a claw hammer to a cranium.

What are your opinions on zombies in video games? What kind do you like? What needs to change or be introduced? Discuss.

I like the slow zombies because they seem more convincing as reanimated corpses. Very fast zombies could be replaced by a number of things and not feel much different. However, when it comes to video games it really depends on what the mood is. Slow zombies are better for a deep dread and limited amounts of ammo while playing a very ordinary person. Fast zombies are for thrilling excitement while playing a "badass" kind of character that is armed with all kinds of weapons.

Yeah. I like the traditional slow zombies.

They are pretty interesting. They give that nice, but gradual pang of fear when they have you pinned in an alley or something, that few other videogame enemies can really offer.

I can't really say which I prefer. I've never really classed fast, infected zombies as actual zombies, but I suppose the enemies I'd prefer to see is governed by the game I'm playing.

If I expect atmosphere in a game, e.g. games like Silent Hill, then I'd prefer to face off against slow, shambling brain chompers. Having fast enemies in real survival horror games, like The Hunters from Resident Evil, is one way of providing variety but I also find them irritating, and they kind of ruin the atmosphere. Whereas if I'm playing a game centered around shits and giggles and strategy, e.g. Left For Dead, I prefer having a variety of enemies which require skill to take down and can move quickly and silently.

The funny thing is, the only film to have actual brain-eating zombies was a comedy with running zombies, The Return of the Living Dead. I'm not sure how one film was able to get that idea started, but it is very funny and full of punk rock.

Especially since in most films and games, zombies only ever bite the wrist or neck. I don't actually think I've ever seen any scene where the brain is eaten.

The top of my head now feels awfully sensitive...

I prefer the slow ones to the fast-moving ones. Especially when they show up at well-hidden corridors and corners. Having them show en-mase whether its in a dark or lit room always scares me because that's when you start to lose hope as their slow, but deliberate march towards you only delays the inevitable feeling that you are just zombie food, or worse.
