Last night I decided to replay this old game, American McGee's Alice, which when I last played I had been left thinking it was interesting but flawed. Replaying it, I find I enjoy it more than ever before.

The game is a sequel to Lewis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In this Alice's family died in a house fire sometime after her adventures, and was admitted to a lunatic asylum where she mentally relives her time in Wonderland, only now she equates the people of the asylum with the Wonderland characters.

One day, Alice finds herself back in Wonderland, but now everything is frightfully twisted. The Queen of Hearts has turned into a monster that is consuming Wonderland, and the remaining creatures still friendly to Alice urge her to kill the Queen of Hearts to restore it to normal—and to give Alice peace as well.

I still like this game very much. It has some delightfully macabre imagery, from the backgrounds to the monsters to the toys to Alice herself. The game is very strong visually. It is simply fun to run around, throwing knives into objects. It is quite dated today, but I still find much to appreciate.

The controls are simple and are learned with little effort. I like them. The third-person perspective works for this game more than a first-person perspective. Music is very atmospheric and moody. I remember some of the tunes well even more than ten years after the game originally arrived.

See the beginning gameplay.

I had heard about this game before. Always sounded vaguely interesting. The way you describe it does make it sound intriguing, though perhaps not enough to seek out such an old game.

It also expects you to have read the two novels first.

I saw this game in a store once or twice and had heard about it from a few people. At the time I didnt have a comp that was set up to play games so I couldnt get it but now....I just might if I find it online or somthing. A person I know even used it as insperation for a lot of his art.

There is a new video game for the PS3 called Alice and it is supposed to be a kind of sequel to the original computer game. Even has the PC game advertised on the back. Might buy it not sure yet.

As for the books I did read the first one and realy enjoyed it but I never read the second one.

Try to get The Annotated Alice if you want to know everything about the writing of the books. I really want a copy of that too.

I bought Alice Madness Returns. I highly recommend this game, and preferably try to get it brand new so you can get the download code to unlock the original alice. I Refused to play the sequel till I'd completed the first game. I must say for a game from 2000 I'm highly impressed.

You just need a vague idea of the story of alice to get into the game and to enjoy it. So having Watched Alice in Wonderland the Disney Film would ground you firmly enough for it.

You need not Read the novels or research it. the premise and the actual Game itself can easily stand alone or be backed up by prior knowledge.
