Zack Snyder, director of Watchmen, would love to direct a movie of The Dark Knight Returns, the other famous dark super hero comic of the 1980's.
For those who don't know, The Dark Knight Returns is about an aging Bruce Wayne having retied from being the Batman some time ago. It's the 1980's, Batman's enemies are all in prison, America is almost at war with the Soviet Union over some island called "Corto Maltese", a terrible heat wave has settled over everything, and crime is worse than ever in Gotham City. A gang called "the Mutants" is terrorizing the streets, killing people for fun. Harvey "Two-Face" Dent has just gotten plastic surgery and was deemed sane, but some crimes mirroring Two-Face's modus operandi begin soon after. Bruce, finding life without Batman empty, puts the costume on again to save Gotham City, even as his appearance seems to make things worse than ever, and people debate if Batman is helpful or harmful. Soon enough, the Mutants declare war on Batman, and the Joker returns from a decade-long comatose state. Life is tough for an older Batman, but he has a new ally: a feisty young girl named Carrie Kelly.
If you didn't feel like reading any of that, imagine of a live-action version of this.
I think it would be kind of interesting to see, but I preferred Watchmen (I generally like Alan Moore over Frank Miller though). It is often said that Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns both show that super heroes are ultimately about fascism, but while Watchmen critiques it, The Dark Knight Returns gives into it. _________________

My stepfather has all four issues of The Dark knight Returns. Very surprised, to say the least.
I'll try to see the movie if it comes out, but at this point, I'm on the fence. |

It sounds like something that would be interesting to see. I wonder if Snyder will get to make it though. Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was many times more successful than Snyder's Watchmen. I don't think the execs at Warner Bros are going to okay multiple Batman films at the same time and Nolan's films are raking in a lot more money for them. I personally doubt any other Hollywood director will be aloud to touch the Batman franchise until Christopher Nolan refuses to work on it anymore, asks for too much money, or if one of his films fails, even if Zack Snyder has the enthusiasm for it.
Maybe in the distant future, but the film version of Watchmen was only a minor success, so I'm not sure if the studio will share the enthusiasm for it. _________________
