A Totem, or animal spirit, is the form that our spirit moulds to the most. Each animal represents different things, and out Totem can be reflected in our behaviour, the way we carry ourselves, even our appearance.

For example, I am a Golden Eagle.

Aside from me having good long-distance vision, an affinity for graceful, powerful movements and a jaw that has been known to dent coins, I also feel much more at home in high places than lower down, and often dream of flight.

This is an extract on what the Eagle means to Native American lore.

Quote:
EAGLE

American Indians see the eagle as a sacred messenger that carries prayers to the Creator and returns with gifts and visions. We use eagles feathers to connect to this majestic and powerful spirit guide as we know the eagle feather holds cleansing and healing powers. The eagle is seen by many cultures as a symbol of courage, vision, strength and endurance.

EAGLE MEDICINE

Eagles need isolation in the wild to propagate and prosper. This teaches us that we have a singular walk in life and must face life on its terms.

Freedom is vital to the survival of the eagle and this teaches us that all people must be free to choose their own paths; to worship as the Creator leads them; and to respect the freedom of others.

As a lesson in balance and equality, both female and male eagles care for their young.

The Eagle teaches how to master the art of patience and how to move through life without material attachments from their ability to sit for long hours perched on a limb in meditation.

Eagles have excellent hearing and can hunt as much by ear as by sight. To those to whom eagle comes, the ability to hear spiritually and psychically will awaken.

Eagles have sharp beaks and strong jaws that can remove a finger in one snap. The eagle tells us to mind our words and how they affects others; to speak kindly without sharp rancor.

Eagles are renowned for their superior vision, ten times greater than human eyesight. This quality is a gift of vision and clarity that should be used to help others through dark and troubling times.

One who seeks the eagle spirit views situations and other people from a broad perspective for better understanding just as the eagle sees the world from a its great height.

The eagle is a creature of the air, but has strong legs to walk on the earth and often lives near the water for food. These qualities of the eagle teach us to maintain balance in all dimensions to achieve inner-growth. As we soar to spiritual awareness, we remain well grounded in reality as we purify ourselves with the cleansing waters.

The eagle teaches us to have the courage to strive for greater heights of spirituality. The Eagle is seen by American Indians as a connection to the Great Mystery - The Creator of all things.

Lily, on the other hand, is a Caribou. I can't find much information, but it's reflected in her long legs, large eyes and especially in her face.

They're both bemused by everything.

Oh, you are using totem and spirit animal as the same thing. I was thinking of totems as a magical animal ancestor of whichever clan you came from, like a protector and mascot for your clan. Very interesting either way.

Bemused is a fun word.

It's all rather ambiguous. I don't think it's really something as black and white as made out by most people.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's individual to a person. I've known people who are literally defined by their Totem. I've also known people who have almost no connection whatsoever.

Yes, Bemused is fun. Like Discombobulated or Confuzzled.

Thank you for using the most horrific picture of me possible, Mr. Toutaku.
If we go by a (only slightly better) better picture:

Then we can see the similarities more in my general body shape. And, going by facial features alone, Toutaku and I both have some physical resemblance to our respective animals (I'm just using the most recent picture of us, him, hopefully quite obviously, being on the left and myself on the right).

I have a flatter nose bridge, dark, wide set eyes, thinner lips, a somewhat ovular/rounded facial structure with high-set cheek bones and overall very soft features. It's not visible unless I smile in a way that shows teeth or from a side profile, but I have a rather goofy, muzzle-like overbite.

Toutaku, on the other hand, looks very "beaky", due to his nose bridge being more prominent. His eyes look sharper than mine, and whilst his facial structure looks softer/rounded from certain angles, it's actually very angular when he smiles. He has less of a jaw than me, adding to his beaky appearance. He's quite tall and broad (especially in comparison to my 5'2" - 5'3" midget self), and there's a certain air of nobility about the way he moves. I'm quite skittish, and I flinch easily.

I was searching for information on Caribou, and it really differs from source to source. I think the overall consensus seems to be that the Caribou is associated with the following aspects:

Quote:
Travel/mobility - Physically, as they frequently migrate. This has relevance to me through my wanderlust, and the fact I can easily get restless staying in one place. There is also a spiritual aspect here - it is said the caribou is the strongest symbol of a personal, spiritual journey, implying progression as you walk through life.

Sensitivity - Caribou people are often sensitive to the energy around them. This relates to my ability of being able to "see" certain energies, as mentioned in the Paranormal thread.

Caution in surroundings - The evolution of Caribou has led to them being very skittish creatures, so much that it would seem some species don't even trust each other. My specific animal, the Peary Caribou, will only travel in up to groups of 12. This has manifested itself in an arguably negative way for me - I naturally distrust everyone, something heightened by my own experiences in life.

Tenacity to complete things - The only thing that will cease a migrating caribou is death. Likewise, once I start something, I will become deeply depressed if I cannot complete it. It's almost a certain stubbornness.

The Caribou is a significant animal in the folklore of Inuit Shamanism, teaching travel and mobility, persevering and enduring to accomplish inner peace and your station in your journey through life.

I wonder about other people's spirit animals a lot.

I would wonder similar things too if the topic was on my mind often.

I personally believe myself to be a bear. Slow to rile, but territorial and protective, of course I am often wrong about spiritual aspects due to my learned spiritual suppresion.

If someone wishes; I could post my basic personality, and someone could slog through animals and suggest my spirit animal.

The first and foremost thing I can think of is that I am loyal. I do not make friends easily, but I will die for each and everyone of them.

I have obssessive tendencies. I must complete everything that I start. I have video games from 2001 that I still play because my progress bar isn't at 100%
Couple that with an inability to give up even the most hopeless of casses and you get an obssesive tendency that will never die. (I pity any woman I grow infatuated with)

I am also incredibly determined and focused. When I set my mind to something I do it. Anything in my way is crushed.

This is probably already inferred but I am incredibly stubborn, of course being Irish, Scottish and Russian, this is probably hereditary.

I don't know if this counts but I am incredibly Intelligent, and yes the incredible is probably is a boast, but I am the only person I know that can read a book, hold a conversation, and write something, all on a different subject, at the same time.

I am a creative person. Plenty of examples come to mind, but I just posted a sonnet on Random: Free Chat, so that can probably prove that.

Oh! I have an incredibly low temper. Mellow if you will. But when I become angry I have a tendency to destroy things or people.

I believe strongly in justice and fairness the world as it is now hurts me. That said I can often detect falsehood from others, and can often spin peoples words back onto them.

If I'm missling something feel free to tell me and I'll answer the best I can.

This is very interesting!
Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I was thinking up an RP post.

The loyalty aspect immediately brings to mind some form of a pack or family-orientated creature, and the determination aspect does remind me very much of a black bear. I sense a power from just your attitude. Not necessarily strength, but certainly an admirable power.
Bears are the animals that govern dreams, so creativity is certainly a must there.

Bears are somewhat intelligent animals, they have a navigational ability superior to humans. Some researchers say that the cognitive thought of some species of bears is on par with some 3 year olds. Which may not seem like much, but for an animal, is rather impressive.

Something that strikes me as odd is that most bear spirits I've met have been very easily enraged. I suppose it's a very individual thing though, and if your temper is destructive. . .

Bears are a rather solitary animal, but family is important to them. A sloth of bears (actual name) are very close knit, and I can see why justice would be important to you. Bears are a species highly oppressed by man.

Overall, I think that a bear would be rather fitting for you, yes. If you want to narrow it down to a specific genus, I could ask a few questions. A picture of you would be nice if you have one you'd be comfortable sharing, since as mentioned in an earlier post of mine some features can manifest themselves physically.

Another animal to consider would be some form of ram. An animal that, when wild, lives in - and often leads - large societies, with a naturally stubborn nature and, when domesticated, an intelligent creature that can help humans perform basic tasks.

Oh gosh, I'm really sorry!
I've mostly spent the day throwing up, watching Harry Potter and taking pictures of my ass. Productive.

I have a couple in mind, at the moment I'm thinking either the Spectacled Bear or the Black Bear.

Thats funny, I spent today throwing up, reading Harry Potter 1 and 2, and sitting on my ass.

I don't think I've been quite as productive as you though.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, I'm gonna go wikipedia Spectacled Bear.
