Ringu is one of the only films to have legitimately scared me. The Eye is another, and I mean the original Chinese film.

Some classics were really scary to me such as The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, first two Friday The 13th films, first three Nightmare on Elm Street films, Poltergeist, and Hellraiser. Also the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, SAW 1, The Ring and The Grudge were pretty scary to me as well.

Ah, films that truly scared me...

Poltergeist scared me when I was very young, and I lived in terror of Night of the Living Dead and Zombi 2 for many years. More recently, Honogurai Mizu no Soko kara was mostly quiet and odd, but it has one brief horrifying moment. Kansen is very eerie and grotesque with a lot of paranoia over what is really happening. An American film, Insidious, was quite disturbing in my opinion, especially the ghostly old woman.

I bought a favorite film of mine on Blu-ray, Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery. A very surreal and nightmarish work that combines the haunted house, mad scientist, and zombie genres. It also has a magnificent theme music.
