In my story Bleach: Creatures of the Night I had written a brief guide to how the Empire of Greater Remuran referred to unique elements in Bleach. Most of that was simply translating the kanji Tite Kubo had chosen, making it easy. For a while, I wanted to write a similar guide to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic terms. This is much more challenging since Friendship is Magic isn't Japanese or East Asian at all, so I have to make up every term myself.

GENERAL

Pony: 小馬 Souma. This is literally "little horse". It would be used for all ponies, foals, colts, and fillies with no distinction.

Earth Pony: 地小馬 Desouma. "Grounded pony", "pony that walks on the ground".

Pegasus Pony: 天小馬 Tensouma. "Sky pony", "heavenly pony".

Unicorn pony: 角小馬 Gokusouma. "Horned pony".

Cutie mark: 脇腹痣 Koubokuji. "Birthmark upon the flank" or "flank spot".

Elements of Harmony: 諧調元素 Haijo Ruisou. "Elements of harmony and unity".

Thank you. I want to do more, but I realized I didn't know what else to translate.

Yeah. I'm not sure what other important terms there are really.

Maybe "dragon" and "griffon".

I'll think about it later. "Dragon" is easy, but "griffon" maybe very difficult.

Never mind, I found "griffin" to be very easy. 獅鷲 Sayau, "lion-eagle".

I'm glad that's the main idea of a griffin; I thought there were other elements, but lion and eagle seem to be all there is.

On rare occasion griffins are pictured with snake tails (which is actually alluded to in Gilda's episode). Usually it is just eagle and lion though.

I know; I was confused by how some griffins had a snake tail, and most didn't. I wonder if there was meant to be overlap with chimeras.

Possibly. They are both part lion.
