Some people say it's amusing but doesn't have the best gameplay. Some professional reviewers say it's just horrible.

I don't personally have anything invested in it, knowing next to nothing of the series, but I do kind of doubt the product could possibly be worth the amount of time and resources that went into making it the past 14 years.

I like things that mock machismo, so I always had a soft spot for Duke. However, the only games I played in the series were the original side-scrolling adventures, and that was decades ago.

The last time I remember playing Duke Nukem was on the Sega Saturn...

Funny you sat it was meant to mock machismo, Rabu. I certainly didn't see it that way, which was why I detested the franchise for being born. But I'll take your word for it to make myself feel better for hating it.

And to respond to Phil, they probably blew it in a bunch of crazy parties, then went "oh, shit," then started crafting the piece of shit that it is today. Gorillas can do a better job at creating a plot for this sort of game.

A lot of people do seem to take Duke Nukem surprisingly serious. I think the name of the character makes it incredibly clear they aren't supposed to.

I somewhat miss the original game. It was cute and silly (shoot a chicken leg and it turns into a full roast chicken, but it you shoot it again it burns up).

I never got to play Duke Nukem 3D, even if that is the version most known to the public.

Yeah, that's obvious, considering I'm one of them.

Here's whar bugs me now: why did it take 14 years to make a mediocre game? They could've made a better plot; hell, they could've taken Yahtzee's plot (which is pretty good for a cynical video game critic) and then it would be worthy of 14 years' delay. I get that its just supposed to be a shooter game like DOOM, but there are some aspects you really just negelect.

Then again, I'm a hypocrite: some of the best games I played imo did not have a decent storyline or explain why I had so and so, so as long I got kill something.

Because the problems were financial and programing-based; first there would be a number of problems with the code, then the project got kicked around because the companies that kept picking it up would have lay-offs and disputes with other companies.

The point of these games was never the story; they just want to be over-the-top and ridiculous.

Ah, gotcha Rabu. Being transferred to one company after another sounds harsh. As are the problems of the code, but I guess I really can't tell how bad it was.

Hence why I said I was a hypocrite and stupid for taking it seriously.

I can somewhat understand the developers plight, knowing about code myself.

I mean, the standards of games have changed multiple times in the past 14 years. They have had to overhaul everything entirely several times to keep up with the evolving industry, I imagine.

Still, for a single game to take over a decade to develop only to be at best average in quality does look kind of silly. There's no avoiding that.

The game itself seems all right to me: it's humorous and seems exciting. I have been told the actual fighting is a little difficult and seems based on Halo too much as opposed to Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, or even Doom. Having only two weapons at a time seems strange for Duke.

I also wish the option to play a heavily-armed woman had been retained since the main series have not had any strong women in them in them yet.

I haven't played it myself, and I wouldn't be able to gauge it's quality if I did with as little I know about the genre, but the general response, disregarding the diehard fans of the series, seems mixed to poor.

Armored women make everything better.
