I think variety is very important to horror games, particularly for enemies. Silent Hill series, Resident Evil series, Doom series, BioShock series, System Shock 2, Half-Life; these games all had a good variety of enemies to face. If there is not much variety then the game faces an up-hill battle to engage me.

In a book about Half-Life 2 that I read, a designer said he thought having big monsters rush at the player is boring, and felt monsters designed to be incredibly disgusting and horrid are much better. What are your opinions?

I agree. The way that monsters like headcrabs and facehuggers work is disgusting, and that's part of the fear they convey. And they are tiny creatures.

I kinda agree, yet I kinda disagree as well. I'm probably the only one who thinks this, but when it comes to horror, I think about any kind of idea can bear fruit when handled correctly and have time and effort put into it.

Big monsters can be scary, like the Hellknight and Bruiser from Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil. Having something big and imposing rushing at you to kill you, especially in a tight claustrophobic environment, is enough to make me panic.

Disgusting and horrid can work as well, but there's a difference between disgusting and scary. They can't make the enemies too gross or else you feel more grossed out than scared.

This is just me though.

I like big fanged beasts, but they tend to get a "Oh, that's so cool!" reaction from me, whereas I feel a need to just fill gross things with bullets, like when I was talking about fighting the Globsters in Resident Evil Revelations. Mostly though, I think it is because I have a hard time feeling scared of most video game enemies, so feeling disgust is better than not feeling anything at all.

I thought one of the most unnerving video game experiences I know is the Oceanside Hotel in Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines, where there is not a single enemy to fight, but an intangible angry ghost surprising you with disturbing visions and exploding things around you.

I'm not sure I could play a game with no enemies. Although that does seem kinda interesting. . .

I think my favorite horror game to date though is Dead Space 2. It had dark atmospheres and creepy lighting which i usually find to be sickening cliches, but that school level with the exploding babies and stuff as pure genius.

It is one section out of many, not the entire game. There are usually humans, vampires, or zombies coming at you with guns and knives.

My favorite horror games are the Silent Hill series, Resident Evil 4, Doom 3, Fatal Frame, Penumbra, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and a mod called Nightmare House and its sequel. I haven't played or seen System Shock but I heard its scary too.

I wish the System Shock games would be released again.

I think that would be a good idea. It can help bring in new people.

Also, with the BioShock games so popular, people should play the games that inspired them.

Oh, that sounds like a pretty cool game.

It is, but it suffered from being rushed out because the company that made it was dying.

I finished Resident Evil Revelations, most definitely a horror game. This is one of the first handheld games in a long time that absolutely kept me into playing. Many others I would play for short periods, but Revelations had be going for hours and hours. It benefits from some of the most repulsive and noxious monsters I have seen in a Resident Evil game, and offers a wonderful mix of pre-Resident Evil 4 and post-Resident Evil 4 controls and atmosphere.
