[Princess Celestia didn't know how it happened.

She had been enjoying her calm morning, taking a break from her duties, when shrouding dark clouds started moving over from the horizon. Then messages started coming in from east about how vast legions of strange creatures showed up and were demanding that Equestria surrender to them. From reports, resistance against them was going poorly. She didn't like it, but perhaps she would have to face the invaders herself.

"How could this have happened so suddenly?" she asked herself as she raced from place to place, getting everything prepared. "I should have seen this in advance!"

If their enemy was who she suspected it was then not even her formidable magic would be enough in the end. However, if she ran away then Equestria would be totally helpless. Somepony would need to defend it, and Celestia herself stood the highest chance of protecting her land.

"Somepony will have to find the way to truly see us through," she said as she wrote her instructions down. "Whoever gets this message got it through exceptional will, kindness, and imagination, all keys to victory in this battle. Please follow the map provided!"

Furiously adding some more instructions, Celestia had her messages sent out, praying they reached their destinations. She left to see that Princess Luna was safe. Already she felt the invaders drawing nearer...

Twilight Sparkle was reading a book on the history of restorative and medical magic. It was very interesting; every form of magic had a brilliant story behind it. Twilight was always ready to dive into an unfamiliar history.

"Twilight!"

Startled, she looked up to see Spike charge into the room, out of breath. "Spike, what is it?" she asked with concern.

Spike was about to say something when his eyes suddenly bulged out a bit. For a second nothing happened, then he disgorged a swarm of scrolls from his mouth, all but one flying out the open window under their own power. The remaining one flew straight into Twilight's eye.

"Ouch!" Twilight blinked the annoying pain away, wondering what was going on. Why would Princess Celestia need to send so many messages?

Spike collapsed on his back, exhausted from the load he had delivered. Twilight's magic picked the scroll up and held it for her to read.

"Dear Twilight Sparkle, my most faithful student," she read aloud, "I had hoped this day would never come, but there is no denying it; Equestria is at war."

Twilight had to read the opening a second time, then a third time. The world around her faded away with only the letter being real. She couldn't believe what she was reading. She had to force herself to read on.

"Our enemy is ancient and terrible, one that has until now been very distant. You must reactivate the Elements of Harmony, but they alone shall not be enough; you shall need to activate the Rainbow of Light and imbue it with the Elements of Harmony. This this not a battle that pure violence can win; only a force tempered with kindness, love, and imagination shall see us through to victory. The Rainbow of Light was last seen far away though, in a land where ponies are not known to live, so disguises may be necessary to avoid detection. I shall try to have the Elements of Harmony delivered to you, but if they do not arrive in one hour come to Canterlot and pick them up. Do not worry about me; I shall remain here and hold the enemy off for as long as I can. The map below shall aid in finding the Rainbow of Light. Good luck."

Twilight couldn't believe what she had just been entrusted to!

Spike picked himself off the floor and groaned. "I hope I never have to send that many messages again," he complained. I nearly choked on all that!"]

[Rarity stood at her work bench within Carousel Boutique. She hummed to herself as she worked on a sleek black dress ordered by a wealthy business mare from up north. Business was exquisite these days. Every day brought bigger and bigger clients, all drawn to Rarity's beautiful designs and meanwhile, the unicorn's personal life was full of life and cheer brought by her friends. She didn't want this high point in her life to end.

It was just as Rarity thought this that her hoof slipped and she accidentally miss-stitched her dress. No. This just wouldn't do. She shook her head and gave a disgruntled moan. She never made such careless mistakes for no reason. This was a sign!

As if on cue, it was then that something flew through an open window nearby and landed right in front of the mare. Curiously yet somewhat tentatively, Rarity approached the scroll and unfurled it with her magic.

"Now whatever might this be...?" she started as she slowly lifted it with her magic. She read it quickly. She gasped at what she was reading.

It was from the Princess. It spoke of war and some ominous threat. The Elements of Harmony were needed. Rarity's body quaked as she stood there stunned for a moment. Her high had just crashed into a wall and for a good moment she didn't know what to do.

"I must find Twilight," Rarity started, nodding. She then ran from Carousel Boutique and her work, determined to find the other unicorn.]

Fluttershy smiled with delight. She managed to get all the little animals fed without too much of a problem. She was glad that Angel was starting to listen to her more about eating slow and carefully, but only when she didn't have to keep reminding him every time.

She was just relieved that Nightmare Night had come to an end. Twilight had to properly explained to her about Princess Luna. She felt a little bad for being scared of the restored Alicorn, but after learning that she had fun with everyone she felt a little better. She still felt that she owed Luna an apology though.

She felt a gentle breezed followed by something flying in and landing in her mane. She pulled it out to find a scroll now in her hooves. "Oh my, what could this be?"

After unfurling and reading it, dread came over the yellow pegasus. It was from Princess Celestia. The words war and violence were enough to put a hoof to her mouth. The Elements of Harmony were needed again, so must mean that her friends were receiving the same letter. She had to find them and quick.

"Oh no, I'm sorry, everyone, but I must be off for a very important errand." Fluttershy apologized to her animal friends and flew out the front in search of the others.

[Twilight, with Spike on her back, came charging out of her house. In a confused moment, she tried to decide where she should go next.

Applejack. She picked Applejack randomly and ran past throngs of confused ponies, down to the Apple farm. One of the scrolls speed past Twilight and Spike. At least she wouldn't need to explain much to her.

She spotted Applejack standing at the barn, looking at the scroll. Good.

"Holy—We're at war?" Applejack cried out. Twilight came running up to her, panting.

"Applejack! Thank goodness you're here! I see you read your scroll."

Applejack turned to her, alarm in her eyes. "We gotta get everypony together!" she said. Twilight was glad that Applejack was relatively calm under the situation.

"Yes!" Twilight agreed. "I'll go look for Fluttershy then."

"I'll get Rarity, then we can look for the others," Applejack agreed. They split up, looking for the others.

Celestia's royal guard marched out to meet the enemy. Armored unicorn and earth ponies formed an impenetrable wall and marched forward. Over a hill, the first enemy wave came down at them.

The attacking creatures were highly unusual to the ponies. Instead of walking on all fours most were bipedal. There were large green muscular creatures in heavy black armor, tall and thin blue creatures in lighter armor that moved faster, small green creatures that commanded steam-belching glittering machines of iron and brass, gaunt white-skinned creatures that looked revoltingly moist drugging and gliding tirelessly, and black-skinned white-haired creatures riding...captured ponies? All of them carried silver bladed weapons and small brass cannons.

The unicorn guards lifted heavy rocks and hurled them into the advancing troops, others using magic to fire large cannons into the enemy. The enemy returned fire with cannons of their own, both blasting holes in each others defenses.

"Charge!" Earth ponies ran into the enemy, knocking them down and stomping on them. The earth ponies were hammered on by all sides with axes and swords.

The pegasus pony soldiers flew in formation through the clouds, carrying bombs to drop on the enemy. "At this angle, their cannons will never reach us!" the leader called.

"No, but we can reach you!" a jeering voice called with an eerie metallic ring to it. The pegasus ponies were startled as a swarm of metal spheres, flew up to them, steam hissing from their surfaces. From the bottom of the spheres came small tubes. Immediately, the tubes began discharging lead projectiles into the ponies. The shots tore through the wings of two unfortunate soldiers, leaving them to plummet screaming into the battle below, their bombs detonating early.

Other pegasus teams carried storm clouds, and were met by the same sphere and zeppelins crewed by strange beings wearing gas masks and black cloaks. They carried long bladed staffs and swiped at the wings of the pegasus teams. Metal spiders larger than even stallions jumped off the zeppelins to engage the earth ponies.]

[Rarity continued to rush away from her dress shop, determined to find the others. It didn't take long before her path crossed with one of them. Applejack was galloping toward her. Rarity went up to her.

"Ah, Applejack... I take it you heard about this... unfortunate mess?" Rarity said, looking down.

"Have you met with any of the others?" she added, concern evident.

Pinkie bounced playfully inside Sugarcube corner. She stopped before a tray of cupcakes and while Mr. and Mrs. Cake weren't looking she picked it up, opened her mouth impossibly and downed the whole thing in one go.

"Tasty!" She commented cheerfully as she set the tray down. The Cakes looked up and shot her disapproving stares. She just giggled innocently and bounced away.

It was then that a scroll suddenly shot into the room and hit Pinkie in the face. She opened it readily and read.

"Hmm..." Pinkie started as she read about war and some terrible enemy. She nodded.

"Bye Mr. and Mrs. Cake!" she said as she began to bounce toward the door, carefree. "Looks like I have to go save Equestria again!"

"Okay, dearie," said Mrs. Cake with an awkward laugh. "You go do that."

"Yeah, have fun..." Mr. Cake commented. Neither of them seemed like they believed her very much.

Pinkie shrugged and bounced out the door, ready to meet her friends.]

Fluttershy flew around Ponyville as fast as her wings could carry her. Turning around the corner she spot one of her friends, the intelligent purple unicorn.

"Oh, Twilight!" The yellow pegasus flew down to join her friend. "I just receive a letter bearing grave news. Equestria is at war again and..." She then noticed that Twilight was carrying the same letter on her person.

"Um, nevermind..." She concluded, seeing that her friend already knew what she was going to say.

"Haha, yeah!" Rainbow Dash boasted, proud to see her job of clearing the skies of any dark clouds. "Today's going to be 100% clea-" She was cut off from a scroll flying by and landing straight in her mouth.

The energetic pegasus nearly choked but pulled the scroll out and read it. Its contents filled her with shock, then slowly followed by anger. "More jerks want to ruin Equestria? Not on my watch! I'll show them. They mess with the best and they'll fail like the rest!" She stated with pure confidence.

"After I tell the others first!" She turned herself around the flew straight down to Ponyville.

[Twilight was glad Fluttershy responded so quickly. "Good, you know what's going on. Did you see any of the other girls?" she asked.

Luna was in the flower garden of Canterlot, singing softly to herself as she took a gander through the wandering mists of morning. Ah, the flowers were certainly beautiful this time of the year! She always liked it when she could stop and think about some abstract concepts such as the role of the universe and what somepony's place was in it. Meandering through the twists and curves of the garden was a stress reliever too. Thinking of that, she should get her sis to come with her on her walks so they could enjoy it together. She hadn't been able to talk with her sister and simply enjoy life together like they used to...

Tia was always so busy, Luna thought it must be hard to run a whole kingdom by yourself. She could help her sister with that though, and she was determined to do so!

Ah speaking of her sis, here she was! Mentally shrieking in delight, Luna forgot the scintillating scent of the flowers when she saw her sister in the garden, running towards her. Happy to see her, she trotted up excitedly as she waited to see why her sister was here. Maybe if she wasn't busy they could even do some stuff together?

"Hi Sis! What are you doing here?"

The unicorn looked down. "But from the sound of Celestia's letter. Things don't look good."

Rarity let out an frustrated groan. "Of all the terrible things to happen, this just has to be the worst!"

Pinkie kept bouncing through the streets of Ponyville, wearing a blissful smile. Then, eventually she saw a glimmer of rainbow colors flying overhead. She knew at once it was one of her dearest friends, Rainbow Dash.

"Hi hi, Rainbow Dash!" she cheered as she bounced even higher, coming up almost half as high as Dash was flying. "Whatcha up to? Want to do some pranks? I have some amazingly super fun ideas!"]

Fluttershy shook her head. "Sorry, no. But if they have the same letter as we do, I'm sure they're looking for us right now."

Dash flew roughly above Ponyville's buildings when she heard a familiar voice then look to her side to see her friend Pinkie Pie bouncy up and down. She flew down and landed in front of the hyper pink pony.

"Pinkie Pie! This isn't a time for jokes and pranks. I just got a letter from Princess Celestia telling us that Equestria is at war! We gotta find the others!"

[After some running around, Twilight, Applejack, and the rest were able to meet. "I guess we wait for the Elements of Harmony," Twilight said nervously. She felt unsure of herself, like she should know what else they could do, but didn't.

Celestia gave Luna a very serious look. "Sister, prepare yourself! A terrible army is coming this way We shall have to hold them off for as long as we can!"

It pained Celestia to order Luna like that, but both of their powers would be very useful.]

Luna gasped.

Armies? In Canterlot?

And her and her sis needed to hold them off?

Well that was certainly a twist she hadn't been expecting. It was her clear duty to defend Canterlot and Equestria from whatever it was that was coming. She would stand up to this threat with all her might, especially because her sis was with her!

"OK Tia! We can do this! Together, right?"

[Pinkie Pie giggled at Dash and produced her own copy. "I know, Dash! I got one too, see!" Pinkie continued to bounce around. "That doesn't mean we can't have fun while were saving the world again! Right?!"

Pinkie stopped her bouncing when she suddenly saw their friends, coming in pairs from opposite directions, Fluttershy with Twilight Sparkle and Rarity with Applejack.

"Hi guys! Did you get Celestia's special letter too?" she excitedly called out.

"Pinkie, this isn't the time," Rarity said, shaking her head dramatically. "Can't you see that this situation is absolutely dire?!"

Twilight then mentioned waiting for the Elements. Rarity nodded.

"Indeed, let us hope that they prove enough once more, or we are all doomed," Rarity said with an accompanying theatrical swoon.

Rainbow Dash sighed as she approached her friend. "No offense, Pinkie Pie, but Rarity is right. Nightmare Moon and Discord were one thing, as difficult as they were, but to hear that we're at war, this is something really big and serious."

"Pinkie might have the right idea, to extent," Fluttershy responded to her fellow pegasus friend. "Um, what I mean is, um, that this is very scary and all, but Pinkie's cheerful nature could be helpful in keeping our spirits up. That is, if you don't mind, Pinkie Pie." She said shyly to her pink friend.

[Celestia flew out, paused over the battlefield majestically, wings, spread wide to cast her noble shadow over the fighting, and swept beams of powerful light through the invaders, sweeping them away in huge slices.

A formation of white pegusi attended the box with the Elements of Harmony stored within. They were to guard the sacred treasures with their lives if needed.

"Help me...Oh please help me..." a mare's voice wailed in pain.

The guard stopped and noticed a unicorn mare lying on her side in a dirt road. She was beautiful, with a long flowing white mane and a shimmering white pelt. Some kind of silver tiara was on her head. She was so slender and delicate-looking that even the hardened guards paused for just a moment.

One moment was enough.

The unicorn lifted her head and smiled, opening her eyes to reveal a sickly green glow and her horn sparkled with a brilliant, cancerous power.

It was comforting to Twilight that her friends remained their normal selves even as they understood their grave situation.

Applejack nodded to Fluttershy. "That's it, we just gotta keep our spirits up and we can make it through this!"

"Twilight Sparkle..." a ghostly mare's voice spoke from all around them. Twilight gasped, chilled that she was hearing something strange, but even more bothered when she realized something sounded familiar about the voice. But what?

"Am I hearing things?" Applejack asked, looking around suspiciously.

"Nope," Spike gulped. "I hear it too!"

"Come to Canterlot!" the voice commanded. "I have the Elements of Harmony waiting! Come and witness the fall of the false goddess and the birth of a holy new era!"

"Oh dear..." Twilight said.]
