This is just a personal opinion, but I think subs are usually better.

I've got a fair amount of experience with both, and English/American voices for a Japanese setting just sound wrong to me.

Yeah. That's probably just his personal bias speaking. Samurai Champloo is one show where the dub is generally considered to be a little better, even by a lot of people who don't typically care for dubs.

Normally Toutaku might be right, but the nature of the series already is an odd mashup of the traditionally Japanese with Western culture, so an English dub isn't actually all that out of place thematically. The dub is really pretty good too.

Wasn't gonna anyway. I like to watch a series in both Japanese and English, if possible, so I can compare the voices. Whenever I play a Naruto game these days, I alternate the audio language, just because I love all the voices.
